Surface oxidation

« Back to Glossary Index

The surface of most metals is covered with a fine layer of oxide which forms spontaneously in contact with an atmosphere containing oxygen. This fine layer, once formed, prevents oxidation of the underlying metal. Because of this, most metals are very stable and have good resistance to corrosion. Hardening the oxide layer can be used to strengthen corrosion resistance. The surface oxidisation can be removed by plasma.
