Aluminium oxide

« Back to Glossary Index

Al2O3, a hard oxide, which exists in several forms including Corundum, which has the greatest hardness. Al2O3 forms spontaneously on the surface of aluminium in contact with air, protecting the aluminium from all other oxidation. It is possible to increase the effectiveness of this layer by anodisation. An argon or halogen gas plasma can attack this layer.
