Plasma torch coating

« Back to Glossary Index

Method of coating surfaces by metals or ceramics. The powdered coating material is introduced into a flow of highly energetic plasma gas (about 12000°K). The material melts and is projected onto the surface where it immediately solidifies. This is very useful in producing durable protection with determined thickness. The technique can be performed at atmospheric pressure (APS, air plasma spraying) or in low pressure inert gas (VPS, vacuum plasma spraying).
