Plasma diffusion

« Back to Glossary Index

Generic term for techniques consisting of treating a metallic surface at a high temperature and diffusing non-metallic atoms with the aid of plasma. The most well-known examples are plasma nitriding, nitrocarburizing, carburation and carbonitriding. The carbides and nitrides have a thickness of several microns and are much harder than the original materials. The diffusion layer below, with a thickness of up to 100 µm, is also harder.
