Ions

« Back to Glossary Index

Atoms or molecules electrically charged, when they lack one or more electrons (cation positively charged) or when they gain one or more electrons (anion negatively charged). The cations are generally metals, while anions are non-metallic. Very high energy impacts in plasmas enable the positive ionisation of non-metallic materials (such as argon, hydrogen or oxygen).
