This technique consists of bombarding ions onto a surface at very high energy so that they penetrate the surface at a depth that can reach up to 0.1 µm. This modifies the composition of the surface and its structure and therefore its properties. As well as hardness, other mechanical properties, such as abrasion and sliding, may be improved, as may resistance to corrosion and other chemical properties.
