Chrome

« Back to Glossary Index

Symbol Cr, white silvery metal, very hard and shiny. Chrome is chemically stable and has very good resistance to oxidation in damp environments. In contact with a non-oxidising acid such as HCl, it dissolves in the form of hydrogen and chromium salt; however, it provides very good resistance to oxidising acids even at high temperature. Chrome plating is used for protection against corrosion and for decoration. It is performed by electrodeposition and, in rare cases, by deposition in the vapour phase. Chrome steels have very good resistance to corrosion and temperature.
