Binding energy

Quantity of energy necessary to break a covalent bond. As the energies of most chemical bonds are high (300-900 KJ/mol), it is necessary to reach high temperatures to break them thermally. Using the high energies present in plasmas, it is easy to break chemical bonds, thus creating highly reactive sites.
