Auger effect

« Back to Glossary Index

This is a phenomenon involving two electrons in which an electron descends to a lower energy state. The energy that is released is transmitted to another electron, which releases itself from the atom (the Auger electron). This phenomenon enables characterisation of the constituent atoms of a surface and their state of valency, especially for lighter elements such as carbon, nitrogen and boron (Auger electron spectrometry).
