Activation

« Back to Glossary Index

Increase in surface energy by removal of surface contaminants or by chemical reaction with it. Examples: removal of oxides on metallic surfaces or generation of polar groups on organic materials. In numerous cases, activation is necessary before the following coating stage in order to improve the wettability and adhesion of the coating. Plasma activation is the most universal method. Other techniques are used, such as flaming, corona or chemical baths.
